» Walkman Phones: The Musical Family.

The Walkman line of portable music players is the brainchild of Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony. The popularity of the device can be judged by the fact that more than 15 million devices have been sold all over the world in more than 300 different models.

Music phones started to appear during the beginning of the millennium and rapidly gained popularity. Not to be left behind, Sony Ericsson too started developing mobile devices armed with superior music capabilities. The idea to include the already popular Walkman brand name to the new line of music phone almost worked like a dream for Sony Ericsson. Today, the Walkman phones have more than just a healthy share in the mobile phone market.

The first Walkman phone, the W800i, was launched during mid 2005 and instantly took the whole music phone market by storm. The amazing sound clarity and powerful output of the Walkman media player became instantly popular. The included goodies like the 2.0 megapixel camera, high speed Internet connectivity at a much lower price-tag almost killed the competition.

The success of the Sony Ericsson W800i paved the way for a series of Walkman phones in different forms and added features but it retained the same high definition sound quality. Sony Ericsson have done well in creating the Walkman phone's distinctive image. The iconic orange colour in design schemes, the Walkman logo as well as letter 'W' in all Walkman phones models quickly separates the handset from the clutter.

Walkman phone's high penetration in the market is due the fact that you'll find one model across all price segment. The Sony Ericsson W950i is presently the highest in the ladder with a colossal 4GB memory pool, touch-screen and a superior Walkman 2.0 player. It is closely followed by W850i, the slider with 3G capabilities, and the W810i that features the same sound quality as the former but lacks 3G. Further down the line, you have the W550i in swivel design and the power-packed clamshell, W300i. In the pipeline are W200i and the highly anticipated W880i.
