»3G Technology: The present and the future ahead.
NTT DoCoMo launched the world's first commercialized 3G(third generation) mobile communication service in Japan on 1st October 2001, and since then 3G has grown tremendously in acceptance and usage. 60 3G networks in 25 countries- the technology has made its presence felt across the globe, transcending many a barrier and charting unexplored territories.

Converging mobility with Internet Protocol based services, 3G technology has given birth to newer ways of communication and entertainment by liberating the world from immovable points of access and cumbersome machinery. Surf the Internet, make video-calls to home and office, or play interactive games with friends - that too on the move. Its not only about applications with 3G, as it is also about convenience and speed. 3G offers-
Greater voice quality;
Enhanced roaming coverage across continents;
High-speed Internet and e-mail access
Up to 2MB/sec always-on data;
Global positioning system
Broadband data services like multimedia and videos and many such services.
With so many possibilities on offer, it's really disheartening to know that 3G technology has not expanded globally and its benefits are not reaching to many people the way it should be. World-wide roll-out of 3G was delayed in some countries due to the enormous cost estimated by operators in getting additional spectrum license. In many countries mobile service providers needed to build new networks and license new frequencies for 3G to operate. The initial frenzy over 3G technology bolstered the license fees in many countries which delayed the widening of 3G network. Things have changed since then and now all major countries are covered with 3G networks.

With 3G getting well established, the world now looks towards 4G(fourth generation) technology. Tagged as the collection of technologies and protocols, 4G is expected to enable highest throughput and low cost wireless network. The application of 4G is still not clear but the improved bandwidths and data transfer might bring something which is away from the realms of possibility till now.
